Next Union Meetings: February 2nd @ 7:30 show up and find out what is going on!!

Since we last talked: Steve McAllister, Ronnie Miller (the handsome one), Leroy Oberding and Daniel Fox won the drawings.

At the Last Meeting....

The resolution to mail back your dues passed 27-9 so watch the mail! If you don't want one. Just let us know.

The resolution to wear hats and do rags during the meeting failed 38-1. I had a Carman Miranda hat all picked out.

The Flier would like to welcome the throngs of apprentices that have been obligated at the meetings. If by chance you are an Apprentice and happened to miss being obligated, please call Jason and let him know. We will get you in.

It is important to know that if you are injured on the job that you must obtain a state workers compensation number. This will protect you in the event of complications due to your injuries. -If your injury will only keep you off for less than a week then you will receive no compensation due to the "waiting week" that the states require. "Company comp" has left some members, and their bank accounts, a little short.

If you are injured, on the job or off, it is important that you list your current or most recent employer on the insurance forms. Local 44 is NOT your employer. This will enable your benefits to get to you much faster!

The flier would like to send out a big thank you to those members who helped to construct the sign in front of the new building. The sign is supposed to replicate parts of the Suspension bridge accompanied by a sign "representing" the passage of time in Cincinnati's Skyline construction. Thanks to, Nicole Campbell, Robert Bales, Markus West, Dan Smallwood, Dave Villani, Mike Phillips, Mike Ryan, Ray Bowman, George Reeves, Amanda Abner, Darryl Clarke, Jason Mullins and others.

Journeyman Upgrade:

Safety and Training schedules are being sent out for January to May 2010. You will find a short list of classes available. We tried to incorporate new classes into the program but just couldn't get enough interest.

Beginning January 2010 the Training classes offered will be those that the International provides a Certification card for. These will be put on one at a time in order for all of the membership to be covered.

The weld shop continues to be open most every day for practice and Wednesdays only for testing. Call Jason and let him know if you are interested in testing.

Apprentice News:

The Apprentice Coordinator and the Apprentice Committee would like to thank the current Apprentice Class. The first semester of school has ended and despite the lack of work the fine people we have in the program remain dedicated to this industry. We have not lost but a small handful from the program. This really goes to show how much character many of them posses.

If you get the opportunity let one know that it will get better and you too appreciate their fortitude.

Beginning in January the Apprentices of Local 44 will be doing 6 hours each of community service. We want to create positive community exposure for all Ironworkers in the area. We want to be at public and charitable events in the Tri-State. Festivals, Parades, Charitable Walks and Anywhere we can be seen and maybe help someone in the process. Let the folks in the neighborhoods know that we are local skilled workers working for locally owned businesses.

If you know of a public event that may need some assistance or a place that they should be seen at call Jason Mullins 859-586-2100 ext. 13 and he will put you in touch with the group of Apprentices who take care of the leg work.

If you have any photos (new and old) of Ironworkers (either hard at it or catching a snooze up against a bolt keg) or any newspaper clippings we would love for you to bring them into the hall. We will copy them into the computer and store them for historical records, make a copy and hang them in the new Hall and Post them on our website. Bring them when you come by, Jason will copy them right away and send them home with you that day.

As you may know by now there has been a shake-up due to resignations in the hierarchy of the Local for the first time in our 105 year history.
Your new officers are:

John Baugh-President
Darryl Clarke-FS/T
Larry Oberding-BM
Tom Weingartner- BA
Marty Michels-VP
Jim Hyden-E-Board
Rick Tibbits-Examining Comm
Mitch Oberding-Sgt. @ Arms.(Replaced due to the retirement of William Warf , Congrats Bill)

The Flier thanks all the officers for stepping up and working as a team to save our Local's Charter and congratulates them on their appointments.

You should have received notice that the monthly dues were increased $1.00 by the International. This change took effect January 1, 2010. If you have paid in advance call the Hall and Darryl can let you know what to do.

The pension will need $.30 this year and more down the road. Just a reminder, our contract expires this year and negotiations in this economic environment should be fun.

The Organizer's duties are now being done by the District Council. However, Tom and Larry have to continue to keep abreast of rat activities in the jurisdiction so keep those calls coming!

If for ANY reason you lose your COATS card eligibility it is up to you to call Amanda @ 317-262-2208. She works for Midwest Toxicology and will guide you through the maze of re-entering the system.

ATTENTION!! A good union member pays their monthly dues on time. CHECK STAMPS ON YOUR JOB!! It only amounts to an extra $120 a year if you pay late each month and Darryl thanks you for the extra cash. It is shocking to see the names of some of the members that work every day and are constantly in arrears maybe alongside of you. Unlike past practices, Darryl is not going to "save" members and it will cost $800 to get back in.

There are a bunch of members that have not participated in the death fund for 2 years or more and many, many more that are woefully behind (2 months and you receive no money). Your family may want you to catch up before you die and they get a big surprise when they are counting on that money to bury you. In addition, if you have divorced or changed your feelings towards someone you may want to change your beneficiary card on file at the Fund Office. The cards are at the Hall.

WARNING If you worked at GE (in the areas that required a guard or escort) you may have been exposed to radiation and entitled to a free physical from the Dept. of Energy. Call Lou Doll @513-681-0864 at the Cincinnati Building Trades for details.

At the last meeting, we voted on two resolutions, gave Lisa B. a token of our appreciation, voted down a softball team, couldn't hear anything, heard that some fool broke the beer cooler at the December meeting and got a warning about Furlongs Sports Bar. Talked bad about you for 45 minutes!

ATTENTION:
If you call the Hall and leave a message please leave your name and a phone number or notify us if you change your phone number and/ or address. Current numbers may mean cash in your pocket.
