In 2009 the Welding program of Ironworkers Local 44 was recognized by the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Ironworkers as a National Welding Certification Program. What this means for us is that the International had challenged us to establish a program that would meet AWS and AISC standards in a testing facility.

After a year or two of work, the Auditors of the International have reviewed our procedures, equipment, processes and paperwork. Over the early part of this year we were notified that we were successful. Now we are one of a small, but growing, number of Local Unions in the International Ironworkers that have a Nationally Certified Welding Laboratory.

What this means for you, the member, is that whenever weld testing within the program you can be sure that your certifications come with the full backing of Certified AWS Welding Inspectors, the Ironworkers Local 44 Safety and Training Department and the International Ironworkers Welding Certification Program.

This new program will continue to offer weld certifications accepted by the Ohio Department of Transportation. These certifications can be viewed by you personally or by your employer online at http://www.odotonline.org/cmsportal/ (click on Materials and Testing on the left and then from the drop down box with select from list choose Welders and search by first initial of last name). Remember these are DOT certifications and expire within a set time period. It is the welders responsibility to maintain his/her own update paperwork. Click here for a copy of the current Ohio D.O.T. update paperwork.

Beyond the regular Weld Certification paper copy, the International will also issue you a nationally accepted Photo ID card. This card will be recognized by local Unions affiliated with the International and many Contractors. Each local may view any Welders Certifications online through the Internationals database as well. You can update your paperwork and access your information also by going to http://www.welderscertification.org/ . A communication will be sent to the local contractors in Cincinnati to remind or introduce them to the new system.

Thanks to a lot of hard work and your sweat we will have a complete Journeyman Upgrade Facility with a new shop open to all members. All current members, retirees and honorary members are invited to use and view the shop on weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Any work eligible member that would like to take a Weld Certification test is asked to notify Jason Mullins in advance but be aware testing will only be available on Wednesdays if scheduled.

Please keep in mind when testing that all persons attempting to certify will receive a Welding Procedure Specification and Welder Qualification Rules and a copy of the Local 44 Shop Rules paper that explains what is to be done by the welder when testing.

**Please note, failure to follow these guidelines will result in failing the test. This is the Policy of the American Welding Society and must be adhered to in order for us to maintain this program.**
